If there is one comedy show that stands above all else in my book, it would be 'The Office'. And it's all because of Steve Carell! He is, I think, the heart and soul of the show. I just can't imagine another actor playing his part as successfully, as hilarious;y. Just looking at him cracks me up! I read somewhere that the role was first offered to Paul Giamatti but he turned it down. Well, too
bad for him. Anyway, I don't think 'The Office' would have been as funny with him in the role of Michael Scott. Michael Scott is Steve Carell. Though 'The Office' is a remake of the British original of the same name, the American team of writers, producers and actors have successfully infused their own style and flavor to set it apart from the original.
'The Office' is presented in documentary style, with the cameras and looks into the lives of the office workers of Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company, Inc. of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Its regional manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell) is a single, middle-aged man who is the boastful tour guide for this "mock"-umentary. With unshaken enthusiasm, Michael believes he is the office funnyman, a fountain of business wisdom and his employees' cool friend. He has no clue that his employees tolerate his inappropriate behavior only because he signs their paychecks. Painstakingly trying to be liked and look cool, Michael comes off alternately absurd and pathetic. His prize possession is his "World's Greatest Boss" mug -- which he had to buy for himself. Ha ha.
Already in its fifth season, I never discovered 'The Office' until the middle of season 3 for I thought it was corny when i first heard about it. Boy, was I wrong. Fortunately, free watch and download sites offer 'The Office' episodes online (video stream) for those of use who missed episodes of this hilarious show, or for those who have already seen it but feel the itch to watch them again.
